Everything you need to know about checking and managing your Visa gift card balance.
Visit our homepage and enter the 16-digit card number found on the front of your Visa gift card. You will also need the expiration date (MM/YY) and the 3-digit CVV security code located on the back of the card near the signature strip.
After submitting your details, the remaining balance displays on screen within moments. Alternatively, you can call the customer service number printed on the back of your card to hear your balance read aloud over the phone.
Balance data is pulled directly from the card processor at the time you submit your inquiry. In most cases, completed transactions are reflected within minutes. However, some merchants send settlement batches at the end of the business day, so a very recent purchase may take up to 24 hours to appear as a posted deduction from your available funds.
Several factors can cause a decline even when funds remain on your card:
Under the CARD Act (federal law), the funds loaded onto your gift card cannot expire for at least five years from the date the card was purchased or the date funds were last loaded. However, the plastic card itself carries a printed expiration date, and after that date the card will no longer work at point-of-sale terminals or online checkouts.
Regarding fees, some issuers charge a one-time purchase fee at the time of buying the card. After 12 months of inactivity, a monthly maintenance fee may apply depending on the card program. These fees and their amounts are disclosed in the cardholder agreement that accompanies your card.
Yes. Visa gift cards work at most online retailers that accept Visa payments. Before your first online purchase, you may need to register the card with a billing address. Look for a registration website or phone number on the back of your card or in the packaging materials.
When checking out online, enter the card number, expiration date, and CVV exactly as they appear on the card. Use the name and address you registered to avoid any billing address mismatch errors. Keep in mind that subscription services or recurring billing merchants may decline prepaid gift cards.
Most Visa gift cards let you establish a PIN during your first in-store transaction. When the payment terminal asks you to choose credit or debit, select debit and enter any 4-digit number you would like to use as your PIN. That number is then stored and required for all future debit-style transactions with the card.
If you forget your PIN, you can reset it by calling the customer service number on the back of your card. Note that not every Visa gift card supports debit (PIN-based) transactions. If the debit option is not available, simply process the payment as a credit transaction instead, which requires only your signature or no verification at all for small amounts.
Generally, Visa gift cards are not enabled for ATM withdrawals. They are designed for point-of-sale purchases at retail locations and online merchants. Attempting an ATM transaction will typically result in a decline. If you need to convert your card balance to cash, some retailers allow you to purchase a money order with a debit card, though fees and policies vary by store.
